Get to Know Me
Hi, I'm Nick Howell, a real tennis professional & currently #5 in the world. I have started this website as way to stay in touch with the people who support me.
Here is a little bit about my background and how I came in to real tennis.
Nick was born in Bordeaux but grew up in in England. His Father is English and Mother is Australian. Sport runs in the family, his father Jonathan is a real tennis professional and a former world #4 and his brother Benny is a cricket professional for Gloucestershire CCC as world as playing for various professional teams across the world
Nick had a love for all sports and went to the Oratory School on a full sports scholarship for rugby and cricket. It was golf that Nick became primarily focused on and at the age of 18 he had decided to turn professional. Nick spent the next 7 years playing on tours such as the Jamega Tour, Euro Pro Tour and Australasian Tour.
By the time Nick was 25, he had stopped enjoying golf and was seeking a new challenge. Real tennis was going to be his new challenge. Nick grew up playing real tennis as a 2nd sport and was always considered naturally talented at the sport. In 2012 Royal Melbourne Tennis Club offered Nick an opportunity to become a trainee real tennis professional. In the 3years Nick spent there, he reached a world ranking of #no11 and handicap of +2.
In March 2015 Nick moved to the National Tennis Club in Newport to become the touring professional. Unfortunately, not long after he arrived the Head professional left and Nick took over as Acting Head Professional.
The National Tennis Club hired World #1 as Head Professional in July and were allowing Camden & Nick to travel and play tournaments. Now that there were two pros, Nick could focus more on his fitness and competitiveness. Before Nick could really get his training under way, he had a health scare in July 2016. Nick ended up in hospital . After treatment and regularly check-ups with the doctor, his health improved quickly.
He hired fitness coach Michael Cecchi. The improvement in Nick’s fitness had an immediate impact as the very next tournament he played in, he reached the French Open Semi Final beating world #4 Ben Taylor Matthews and narrowing losing to Rob Fahey 6/5 in the 4th set.
Since then Nick has gone on to beat World #4 again, the world #no5 in straight sets at the 2017 US Open in March and the beating the greatest of all time Rob Fahey 6/2 6/2 6/2 in The Champions Trophy quarter final in July, losing to World #1 Camden Riviere and the eventual winner in the semi-final.At the start of 2019 Nick made the Final of the World doubles Championship and his first singles final at the Australian Open by beating World no 2 and world no 3 on his way to the final
Nick qualified for the World Championship eliminators for the first time in his career at the end of 2019. The top 4 players who have picked up the most race points from tournaments over the 2 year cycle have the chance to play in the World Championship against the reigning World Champion which is Rob Fahey.
no 1 qualifier plays no 4 and 2 plays 3. The winner of those matches will then play each other in a final eliminator and the winner of the final eliminator will take on Rob Fahey in the World Championship in a best of 13 set match over a week.
In February 2020 Nick made his second major singles final of his career, reaching the US Open singles final
At the end of 2020 Nick accepted a role as the Head Professional of the new real tennis court in Bordeaux
Nick is now ranked #5 in the world
