My preparation for this tournament has gone well.

I have trained hard with Michael Cecchi and recently had Ryan Harry, the Head Tennis Professional at ITHF join me in my sessions to help push me even harder. We have also been doing BoxFit every Tuesday at 6.15am which is a great cardio workout. I wanted extra fitness seesions leading up to the French and with Mike in high demand I used  one of his PT's, Kevin Davis who is brilliant trainer. We worked hard on improving my hip strength.

The French Open looks good for me singles and doubles. With no Camd...

The doubles over the weekend at Prested Hall unfortunately did not go to plan. I arrived Friday Lunchtime to play SF match at 5pm. I would of arrived earlier but there were no practice courts and I was enjoying an extended break with Family. I was also confident that we wouldn't have too much trouble with our opponents as they are both high single figure handicaps. We did win this match fairly comfortably. 6/2 6/2 6/4 but I didn't feel too comfortable on the court as its a funny court that has glass back wall.

I was still confident that we would be o...

I had gone in to the tournament full of confidence with the way I was playing, with my head space and my fitness. My first match against Craig Greenhalgh was a nice warm up to face Camden Riviere. Craig is a good player with a handicap of 5. I played well and didn't make many errors so I was pleased to walk off the court having only lost 2 games.

I was really pumped to take on Camden and thought I could push him and give him a scare. The early exchanges were close and the first 4 games went to deuce, but I won none of those games. I was getting incre...

After the US Open in February, I put the racquet down for a few weeks training wise as I was still giving plenty of lessons and then I went to Chicago to help Steve Virgona with the Final Eliminator. I kept up my fitness with Michael Cecchi , but  most of April was tough as I had a drop in my iron levels again. I am pleased to say that i they are back up and at a  a good level. This should hopefully be the last time I have this problem as I am now in touch with the GI to get my problem sorted once and for all if it flares up again.

After I got back from Australia, I got straight back in to training with my fitness coach Michael Cecchi and  had a few trips to Boston to practice including a hit with Steve Virgona last week.  Preparation was on track until I went up again to Boston to hit with Boston Pro Leon Smart just a few days later. After our hit we went out for dinner and I ate some dodgy fish as I woke up early in the morning throwing up so I had giving myself food poisoning which knocked me around for a few days .  Fortunately  I felt much better with the tournament about...

After spending Christmas with family, I flew to Hobart on New Years eve to prepare for the 2018 Australian Open. After landing in Hobart, I headed straight to the club for a 2 hour practice with Rob Fahey.

An ariel view of Point Nepean  I took from my window seat on the way to Hobart.

On New Years Day I had my first match against one of Australia's best amateurs Al Ramsay. I wanted to put in strong display so that would give be good confidence on a tricky Hobart court. I was pretty happy with how I played and I won the match 6/1 6/0 6/0.

 My next...

I won my first round match against Zak Eadle who is a young and upcoming player. The score was 6/3 6/1 6/4. I was happy with how I played for the most part. I was trying out different serves & I was working on cutting the ball more on the floor rather than forcing too often to try and extend the rallies so I get used to the court. Zak did manage to get a few games with some good forcing and he got 4 games in the last set, I was 4/1 up however but I really was trying some different shots on the court to see what works well rather than being clinical...

I arrived in London early yesterday morning. After checking in to my friends place which is fortunately right by Queens Club, I made my way to my old school The Oratory for an exhibition with Rob Fahey.

Lots  of people came out to watch which was great. New faces, old faces and students. When the marker announced my name as an old oratorian there was a huge roar that gave me tingles down the back of my spine. It was very surreal .

I wasn't sure how seriously Rob was going to take the exhibition. After the first game took 10 minutes I realized h...

On Wednesday Oct 11 I had my first National league match of the season playing for New England/Philadelphia against New York in New York.

My teammate was John Lumley and we were plying against Barney Tanfield and James Stout.

John was playing as the no 2 so he was up first against Barney Tanfield. John was very solid and beat Barney 6/2 6/2

It was now my turn to take in James Stout knowing that if I win we would win the night and make the job of reaching the final of National League a little bit easier. James is the racquets world champion and is also...

The French open this year had one of the strongest draws in recent years and kept the field to just the best 16 in the world that entered. The top 10 players in the world automatically qualified and then it was by handicap.  All the top 10 players had entered for the first time in 3 years.  I was going in to the tournament ranked no 8 in the world. My career high ranking. This would usually mean I would get seeded and be protected from playing one of the top 8 before the quarter finals. As the French only keep the draw to 16 players, they are not al...

Michael Cecchi owns Bridge to fitness with his wife Lisa. His gym was voted the best gym in Rhode Island in 2017. Their gym is not the biggest gym in the state but it is full of heart. You feel so welcome every time you go there. The trainers are so motivating and positive. The people who train there are all so friendly. It's not like any other gym I have been a member of. I feel like I am part of a club, not just some gym.

I first  met Michael through Doug Shear in 2015. I would train with Doug and Mike from time to time. I was impressed w...
